Meet Kumbi: A Night of Courage, Coffee & Conversation at ZimKaffee

Nov 20, 2025

Roundtable Discussion & Book Reflection with Kumbi Kahiya

At ZimKaffee we celebrate African stories that inspire, challenge, and uplift. Join us for an evening that blends literature, activism, and community conversation.

About the discussion

Join us for an intimate roundtable discussion centered on the award-winning novel “The Uncertainty of Hope” by Valerie Tagwira, winner of the 2008 National Arts Merit Award (NAMA), Zimbabwe. The session will begin with a short summary of the book, followed by a deeper exploration of its themes and their connections to Zimbabwean realities.

Speaker

Kumbirai “Kumbi” Kahiya — women’s rights activist and founder of the Girls and Women Empowerment Network (GWEN). Through projects such as the Smart Girls Nest, GWEN supports education, digital access, protection from gender-based violence, and economic empowerment for girls and young women in rural Zimbabwe.

Kumbi: A voice for girls’ safety and self-determination

  • Founder & Director of GWEN (Seke, Zimbabwe)
  • Developer of a learning centre for vulnerable and at-risk girls
  • Planner of a women’s shelter to provide long-term safety and support
  • Programs focused on education, economic independence and leadership

Why this moment matters

Kumbi is visiting Switzerland during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, sharing field stories and connecting with supporters. Her stop at ZimKaffee is a rare chance to hear first-hand how literature and lived experience intersect in Zimbabwe.

What to expect

  • Brief introduction to The Uncertainty of Hope
  • Roundtable discussion exploring themes and socio-political connections
  • Insights from Kumbi about realities in rural communities
  • Q&A and open dialogue
  • A relaxed evening with African specialty coffees and wines

Note: It is not necessary to have read the book to join.

Support

We will host a small fundraising table for those who wish to support GWEN’s learning centre and planned women’s shelter.
